To Paint A Place

To paint a place

Is to take in every detail.

Every shadow.

Every imperfection.

The way light catches the edge of a railing

Or the brim of a lamp post

The top most blades of the grass

And those independent leaves

That have stretched free from the pack.

I see the reds in the yellows

The blues in the shadows

And pray I notice the spaces that are best left bare

And not brush over them without care.

Could you know a place more

Than that you’ve once painted before.
